The Reverend John BirrellFor a number of very practical reasons, it is not possible to hold the traditional kind of Sunday service within the hospitals.

At one time, the average stay in hospital was counted in weeks - now it's counted in days or even hours; and that reflects the increasingly "acute" nature of a busy general hospital. Twenty years ago there were many recuperating patients who were fit enough and mobile enough to make their own way, or be escorted, to the hospital chapel.

The majority of patients today return to their own homes - or to their local hospitals - at the very earliest opportunity. Add to that the ever increasing pressure on staff and the increasingly technical nature of nursing and you have a picture of the practical difficulties involved.

It has now been possible to offer a short act of worship each morning and evening to all who wish to share in it. After the 9am and 9pm news each day you can hear our "Thought For The Day". Each thought has been written by the hospital chaplain the Rev. John Birrell with the hospital experience in mind.

A booklet containing the various texts currently being broadcast has been placed in the chapel at Perth Royal Infirmary where it is hoped they might prove of interest to visitors and patients alike.

"REJOICE!" each Sunday morning at 10 a.m. is morning worship with an uplifting mix of religious music, thoughts and interviews. The content is mainly non-denominational Christian. The programme features hymns, sacred music and modern pieces plus interviews with individuals about their beliefs and with those involved in work ranging from the slums of Bombay to the man who hires out an inflateable church. It's a thought provoking hour for those of all religions and none.

In addition, from time to time we broadcast services from local churches - whilst these are irregular, they will be advertised on the radio in the preceding week. In the past we have broadcast from around ten churches in the Perth area and all have proved to be very successful. This is one part of our service which we would really like to expand. If you would like to help us with this project, please get in touch.
